A self automated buggy that can cross many varying terrains using sensors and cameras, that is what the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency was able to develop and put to the test. The prototype of the RACER drone showed great promise on the testing grounds as it shows the possibility of, “enabling Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) to maneuver on unstructured off-road terrain at speeds that are only limited by considerations of sensor performance, mechanical constraints, and safety”, which ultimately allows military operations to be executed effectively without having to risk soldiers’ on the battlefield.

The purpose of said vehicle would be to scout positions while not having the constraint of rough terrains. During the latest tests, conducted in March of this year at the Army’s National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California, RACER vehicles completed more than 55 drives, ranging from approximately four to 11 miles, and traveling at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. We will most definitely see more of these UGVs in areas of conflict around the world.
